How to Prepare Photos for Retouching: A Photographer’s Checklist from a Retoucher’s Perspective

Introduction

Preparing your photos for professional retouching is a crucial step to achieve outstanding results. While it might seem like a small detail, proper preparation can save time and enhance the final image quality. Here’s a simple checklist to ensure your files are retouch-ready.

1. Camera Settings Matter

Shoot in RAW Format: Unlike JPEG, RAW preserves maximum detail and color information, giving the retoucher more flexibility.

Set the Right White Balance: Avoid unnecessary color casts by ensuring proper white balance during the shoot.

Use Low ISO: A low ISO reduces noise and helps maintain image sharpness.

In fact you should know better what settings to set for your own camera, and I retouch any format! just your expectations should match reality. it is much harder to get details out of a dark jpg than a RAW.

2. Lighting and Exposure

Do you want to hear this from a retoucher?

Now is the time to push the boundaries and experiment. Make dark shots your signature style instead of following traditional rules. It’s all about creating and breaking the mold!

3. Composition Tips
Check the Background: Remove distracting objects or elements to simplify the retouching process.

There are no strict rules about composition here — it’s all about your creative vision!
4. On-Set Details

Perfect the Basics: Ensure makeup, hair, and wardrobe are as flawless as possible before the shoot.

Clean the Scene: Stray hairs, dust, or creases in clothing can be time-consuming to retouch—handle them during the shoot if possible.

5. File Organization

Name Your Files Clearly: Use consistent naming conventions that reflect the project or session.

Group Files by Shoot: Keep all related images in one folder to avoid confusion.

6. Share Your Vision

Provide Reference Images: Share examples of the style and mood you’re aiming for.

Discuss Details in Advance: Whether you want natural skin textures or a polished editorial look, clear communication ensures better results.

Important Note:
Even if not all of these steps were perfectly executed during the shoot, don’t worry! My expertise as a professional retoucher lies in addressing imperfections and elevating your images to their full potential. This checklist is simply a way to streamline the process and achieve the best possible results faster.

Conclusion

Thoughtful preparation can make a huge difference, but you can trust me to handle any challenges that arise. If you’re ready to create flawless, high-end images, feel free to reach out—I’d love to help bring your vision to life!

Before and After Among retouchers it's quite a controversial topic to show photos before retouching.  But I want to show you a small part of my work. So you can see how retouching can change a photo. Of course I do this with the permission of the photographer Eric Lamothe! Just look at how the image changes over the course of four frames – isn't that amazing?! In the first frame , you can see the model's clean skin and hair. In the second frame , we have cleaned up the floor, removed the background and smoothed out the plume of the dress a bit. In the third frame , we have replaced the model's arm and added details to the darker parts of the dress. In the fourth and final frame , we have replaced the bottom of the dress and shoes and changed the silhouette a bit. And that's it!

Retouchers now focus on preserving natural pores, fine lines, and realistic tones, creating authentic yet polished looks. For instance, Chanel’s Cruise 2025 campaign, shot by Jamie Hawkesworth , showcases this approach with its sun-kissed imagery.   2. Cinematic Color Grading Inspired by blockbuster movies and streaming series, cinematic color grading with moody tones or bold contrasts is dominating editorial and advertising shoots. Miu Miu’s Spring 2025 collection , presented in a setting resembling a newspaper printing factory, exemplifies this trend with its dramatic and storytelling visuals.   3. Minimalistic Retouching Subtle and refined adjustments are the new gold standard. Modern clients, especially luxury brands, demand a cl...
